Happy Bastille Day (14 July 1789)
Je me trompe ou il commence à faire plus chaud ici?
Jouyeux quatorze juillet everyone!
Original image from La Guirlande (1919)
Break out the rosé, it’s Bastille Day!
And while we are on the topic of France, here’s another French word: cliché. As in, I need something about France for Bastille day so here is yet another image from Gazette du bon ton.
I guess I could find better clichés than this lovely trocolore bouquet (the tricolore being the nickname for the flag of France) from tome 2 of the 1914 Gazette du bon ton.
See all things France in our digital library, including art, aeronautics, fashion, children’s books, and, alas, colonialism :/

imho brexit has been a long-winded excuse for nationalism in this country.
i havent spoken to a Leave voter who has been able to provide a reason other than ‘immigration’ for their vote. my BFF has one colleague who voted that way because hes invested in a small farming business which benefits from the separation from the EU, and that’s fair enough!
but for a lot of folks it seems to be about building some sort of 50s sitcom dreamworld where britain has a stronger national identity. people think separating from the EU will stop immigration which, aside from being frankly ridiculous, also strikes me as thinly veiled racism.
(britain as a country brought its melting-pot culture and lack of real traditions on itself in the 16th century when it was invading other countries, stealing their valuable resources and engaging in slavery. i feel like people forget that)
brexit really brought home to me the bias of our media, too; i work in a coffee shop and we have lots of different newspapers in the store every day
most days this includes the Times (which we sell), the Sun (often brought in by customers), the Daily Mail, Metro and Guardian. the first 4 newspapers have been very heavily biased towards Leave, of which the first two are owned by News Corp, the next two by DMGT (a middle-class conservative organisation)
just goes to show that despite the illusion of a wide range of opinions and information suited to everyone out there, you’re really only getting one overall opinion; that of two rich middle-class organisations run by two rich middle-class men.
the BBC is widely touted by non-UK dwellers as our main source of news but realistically newspapers are still a huge part of our information, plus the companies i mentioned before also own huge stakes in other media
one last thought; im sick to death of today’s 18-35 year olds being outvoted by a sprawling conservative geriatric population who are not going to live to see their political choices affect them. young people are jaded enough about voting as it is, and to be consistently disappointed by a country that is proving itself time and time again to be unconcerned by our interests is heartbreaking.
TL;DR:
UK MEDIA IS NOTORIOUSLY UNRELIABLE. BREXIT IS A THINLY VEILED EXCUSE FOR RACISM. OLD PEOPLE ARE RUINING A FUTURE THEY WILL NOT LIVE TO SEE. BYYYYYYYEEE!!
Good to see the British press doesn’t have an agenda and is politically independent like it should be. Dat quality.
