When Peter Bellerby couldn’t find the perfect handmade globe for his father’s 80th birthday, he took matters into his own hands. He spent the next few years learning and perfecting the lost art of globemaking, which turned out to be a difficult, detailed process. Today, he runs Bellerby & Co Globemakers out of a small London studio with a team of 15 skilled craftsmen who create every masterpiece by hand.
A recently discovered globe from the early 1500s, carved onto ostrich eggs, may be the oldest globe of the New World ever identified.
This rare find came into the possession of Belgian map collector Stefaan Missinne. Dr Missinne said the globe reflects knowledge of the New World by early European explorers.
Latin inscriptions, monsters and delicate outlines of countries decorating the sphere constructed from two eggs, were made in the early 1500s. It could have been crafted in Florence…
